INTERESTING TOWNS IN THE JIHOMORAVSKY REGION
 
The South Moravian (Jihomoravsky) region covers a total area of 7,076 km2 demarcated by the districts of Blansko, Brno-mesto, Brno-venkov, Breclav, Hodonin, Vyskov and Znojmo. 645 towns and villages lie within this area, with a total population of 1,137,289. The centre of the South Moravian Region is the city of Brno, to where around 60,000 people commute every day to work or school. The South Moravian Region is the fourth largest region in the Czech Republic, with the third largest population.

The South Moravian region shares borders with Austria and Slovakia, and within the Czech Republic also borders the South Bohemia, Vysocina, Olomouc, Pardubice and Zlin regions. Along with the Vysocina region it comprises the entity NUTS II. Natural conditions within the region are extremely diverse, and have a considerable influence on the method of land use and the way of life as a whole in the region.

As of 31 December 1999 a total of 212,659 entrepreneurial subjects were registered in the South Moravian region, of which 448 were state concerns and 148,265 private individuals. Out of the total number of 343,349 employed and registered persons the greatest number (116,992) work in industry. The level of unemployment in the South Moravian region amounts to 9.85 %. The average wage is 11,803 CZK.

As of 31 December 1999 a total of 88 secondary vocational schools, 43 grammar schools, 58 vocational colleges, 16 vocational colleges of higher education and 5 universities were registered in the South Moravian region. There are many important historical monuments and localities suitable for recreational leisure time use (hiking, cycling, etc.) in the South Moravian region. The region has a total of 68 museums, 15 theatres, 70 cinemas and 161 public libraries.
