INTERESTING TOWNS IN THE OLOMOUCKY REGION
 
Olomoucky region is situated in the north-central Moravia. Border with Poland is 104 kilometres long. The area of 5,139.3 km2 has a big share of large protected landscapes Jeseniky and Litovelske Pomoravi 10.8 % (CR 14.7 %). The region consists of the following townships: Jesenik, Olomouc, Prostejov, Prerov, Sumperk and places eighth among the 14 Czech regions. The highest point of the region is the peak Praded (1,492 meters above the sea level) in Jesenik Township. The lowest point is the surface of Morava River near Kojetin in Prerov Township. The base for agricultural production, the agriculture land acreage, covers in the Olomouc region almost 278,000 hectares, which is almost 54.0 % (CR 54.3 %) of the land in the region. Important parts of the region are the forested areas (34.4 %), especially in the north part of the region in Jesenik Township (59.2 %) and in Sumperk Township (48.2 %). The rest of the acreage are built-up and other areas. The agricultural land is in 76 % arable, almost 18 % are meadows and grazing land, especially in Jesenik Township, where the number reaches 1/3 of the agriculture land. Gardens and parks cover 5.5 % and almost 0.5 % of the land is covered with hop gardens, especially in the area called Trsicko - Kokorska on the border between Olomouc and Prerov Townships. Smaller part belongs to fishponds and other waters, namely near Tovacov in Prerov Township (1.7 %). The structure of agricultural land changed since 1990, when it was decided to extend meadows and grazing land areas.

Demographic development of the Olomouc region during the last ten years (1990 - 2000) can be described by continuous decline of people in pre-productive age (0 - 14 years of age) and increasing number of the post-productive part of population above the 60 years of age. After the big social and economic changes during early 90-ties, the number of marriages in Czech Republic decreased rapidly. While in the early 90-ties majority of the couples entered the marriage in quite an early age, then in 2000 the average age increased by 4-5 years. Number of divorces is also increasing, temporary decrease in 1998 was caused by legislative changes. Since 1995 the fertility rate of women aged between 25 - 29 years increased, in 1999 the development changed and the fertility rate started to increase for the age category between 30 - 44 years of age. The natality rate in the region till 1995 can be described by quite a rapid decrease of the birth-rate, since 1996 till 2000 the decrease slowed down a little bit. The number of finished pregnancies in 2000 was half the figures recorded ten years sooner. On the other hand, decrease in the number of abortions was more intensive than the decrease of births. Number of deceased decreased during the period, middle life expectancy increased. Most of the men die in the age group between 70 - 74 years of age, in case of women the category is 85 years and higher. More than half of the deaths are caused by circulatory failures. In 1994, the number of deceased exceeded the number of births and the negative numbers continue during the following years. In 1990, the region had a population of 642,731 while in 2000 the number reached 641,072.

Olomoucky region is mainly industrial and the highest employment can be found in heavy and building industry. Employment in agriculture reaches 8.1 %, one half higher than the Czech average (5.5 %). Dominant position in economy have the companies in processing industry, general engineering, metalwork industry, electrical and optical equipment productions. Among the other important fields are textile, glass industry and production of building materials.
