Olomoucky region is situated in the
north-central Moravia. Border with Poland is 104 kilometres
long. The area of 5,139.3 km2 has a big share of large
protected landscapes Jeseniky and Litovelske Pomoravi
10.8 % (CR 14.7 %). The region consists of the following
townships: Jesenik, Olomouc, Prostejov, Prerov, Sumperk
and places eighth among the 14 Czech regions. The highest
point of the region is the peak Praded (1,492 meters
above the sea level) in Jesenik Township. The lowest
point is the surface of Morava River near Kojetin in
Prerov Township. The base for agricultural production,
the agriculture land acreage, covers in the Olomouc
region almost 278,000 hectares, which is almost 54.0
% (CR 54.3 %) of the land in the region. Important parts
of the region are the forested areas (34.4 %), especially
in the north part of the region in Jesenik Township
(59.2 %) and in Sumperk Township (48.2 %). The rest
of the acreage are built-up and other areas. The agricultural
land is in 76 % arable, almost 18 % are meadows and
grazing land, especially in Jesenik Township, where
the number reaches 1/3 of the agriculture land. Gardens
and parks cover 5.5 % and almost 0.5 % of the land is
covered with hop gardens, especially in the area called
Trsicko - Kokorska on the border between Olomouc and
Prerov Townships. Smaller part belongs to fishponds
and other waters, namely near Tovacov in Prerov Township
(1.7 %). The structure of agricultural land changed
since 1990, when it was decided to extend meadows and
grazing land areas.
Demographic development of the Olomouc region during
the last ten years (1990 - 2000) can be described by
continuous decline of people in pre-productive age (0
- 14 years of age) and increasing number of the post-productive
part of population above the 60 years of age. After
the big social and economic changes during early 90-ties,
the number of marriages in Czech Republic decreased
rapidly. While in the early 90-ties majority of the
couples entered the marriage in quite an early age,
then in 2000 the average age increased by 4-5 years.
Number of divorces is also increasing, temporary decrease
in 1998 was caused by legislative changes. Since 1995
the fertility rate of women aged between 25 - 29 years
increased, in 1999 the development changed and the fertility
rate started to increase for the age category between
30 - 44 years of age. The natality rate in the region
till 1995 can be described by quite a rapid decrease
of the birth-rate, since 1996 till 2000 the decrease
slowed down a little bit. The number of finished pregnancies
in 2000 was half the figures recorded ten years sooner.
On the other hand, decrease in the number of abortions
was more intensive than the decrease of births. Number
of deceased decreased during the period, middle life
expectancy increased. Most of the men die in the age
group between 70 - 74 years of age, in case of women
the category is 85 years and higher. More than half
of the deaths are caused by circulatory failures. In
1994, the number of deceased exceeded the number of
births and the negative numbers continue during the
following years. In 1990, the region had a population
of 642,731 while in 2000 the number reached 641,072.
Olomoucky region is mainly industrial and the highest
employment can be found in heavy and building industry.
Employment in agriculture reaches 8.1 %, one half higher
than the Czech average (5.5 %). Dominant position in
economy have the companies in processing industry, general
engineering, metalwork industry, electrical and optical
equipment productions. Among the other important fields
are textile, glass industry and production of building
materials.
