Pardubicky region is situated in
the eastern part of Bohemia. Location of the region
is also determined by the bordering regions - Central
Bohemian, Kralovehradecky, Olomouc, South Moravian and
Vysocina. Together with the regions Kralovehradecky
and Liberec they create the so-called NUTS 2 - Northeast.
Part of the northeast border of the region is also border
with Poland. From here, it is enclosed by the southern
part of the mountain ranges called Orlicke hory and
the most western slopes of Hruby Jesenik. South and
southeast are bordered by the highlands called Zdarske
vrchy and Zelezne hory. The river Elbe and the lowlands
called Polabska nizina dominate central and western
parts. Orlicke hory, Zdarske vrchy and Zelezne hory
are among the protected landscape areas of the region.
The area reaches 4,519 km2 (5.73 % of the whole Czech
Republic). This makes the region the fifth smallest
in the Czech Republic. Considering the area of the region,
60.8 % is agricultural land (44.7 % of it is arable
land). Forested area covers 29.3 % of the region. The
highest point of the region, the peak called Kralicky
Sneznik (1,423 meters above the sea level) is also the
third highest in the Czech Republic. The whole area
of Kralicky Sneznik with the remains of original flora
and with high moors is the national nature preserve.
The lowest point of the region is the Elbe river surface
near Kojice, close to the west border of the region
(202 meters above the sea level).
Pardubicky region consists of four townships - Chrudim,
Pardubice, Svitavy and Usti nad Orlici. It has 453 municipalities
(6th highest number of municipalities among the 14 Czech
regions). The region also has the 3rd smallest average
land register area of 10.0 km2 and average medium population
of 1,123 citizens (10th among the 14 regions in the
Czech Republic). The gradual formation of the micro
regions in the region is based on the partnership principles
- one of the strong points, which should help its overall
development. The share of region's population living
in villages with less that 500 citizens reaches 13.7
%, which is approximately by 2/3 higher share than the
Czech average figures. The share of population in municipalities
with 500 to 1,999 citizens reaches 23.4 % and is by
1/3 higher than the Czech average. The share of population
in municipalities with 2,000 to 9,999 is by 1/10 higher
that in the average figures. The share of the municipalities
with 10,000 and more citizens is 41.2 %, which is approximately
1/3 less than the Czech average. The region metropolis
Pardubice accommodates 18.0 % of citizens. Population
of the region was, as to December 31st, 2000, 508,566
citizens, which is approximately 5 % of the all Czech
Republic population. In comparison with past years,
there is a decreasing tendency in the region (compared
to 1999 by 0.3 ‰). Pardubice Township has the highest
population in Pardubice region, followed by Usti nad
Orlici, Chrudim and Svitavy. The three largest cities
in the region are Pardubice, Chrudim and Svitavy. From
the age structure viewpoint, during 2000 we can notice
the decrease among young people less than 15 years of
age (influence of the decreasing number of births).
Increase can be noticed in the age groups between 15-64
years of age (by 4.1 ‰), as well as in the age group
of 65-years and older (by 6.7 ‰). The old age index
(ration of the citizens older than 65 years of age to
those younger than 15 years of age) reached the value
of 83.5 (while in 1999 it was 81.0). From the relative
aspects of demography it is important to mention the
second lowest Nat mortality in the Czech Republic (0.9).
